Patchwork of Vaasa Activity

A Parting Patchwork

UWASA is a special place and I’d love to share with you some of my favourite things. I’m referring to my final blog post as a patchwork, in that it’s a random selection of the fabric (or pieces) that when brought together, makes a beautiful whole.

Methodology & Meaning

Piano scrolls were one of the first widely accepted examples of an ongoing relationship between technology and the arts.  They were modelled on the punch cards used by Jacquard looms, which successfully translated human intention into machine action, laying the groundwork for coding, and eventually AI.

It was a lovely compromise as I was unable to gather moss as tempting as it was.  It is one of the few exceptions to what is known as “The Everyman’s Rights,” or Jokaisenoikeudet, the right for every person to roam free, forage, and gather from forests and natural areas regardless of land ownership.

Cotton girls and wool mill teams

As many of the employees were women, it could be argued that the Cotton Mill and similar manufacturing industries in the region, were the first to take the early steps towards a shift in gender roles and the societal equity that is enjoyed in Finland today.

Mao Activity

We ALL use technology but are we ALL equal in the tech?

Aila Kronqvist is an information and enterprise architect at Solita, and PhD candidate at the University of Jyväskylä, Finland. Aila is currently completing her PhD in Cognitive Science on the role of gender in the experience of women working in the information technology field. The research takes a close look at how the experiences influenced by gender affect cognition in the workplace.

XR Ocean Hackathon

PhD Researcher and VME Family Member, Vaiva Stanisauskaite, was heavily involved in the planning and coaching of the XR Ocean Hackathon this year. Afterwards, Vaiva took the time to interview the participants to gather their reflections of this great event.
