Sustainability

Making NordiCHI more sustainable: A guide for participants

We aim to work more sustainably and arrange a conference that takes sustainability into account.

We are considering environmental and social sustainability in the planning and execution of the conference.

As a participant, you are important, and we invite you to help us arrange the event in a more sustainable way.  You can make a difference throughout the exciting conference days.

Here is your practical guide to participating more sustainably throughout the event.

Getting Here & Moving Around

On the Travel page, you will find different options for getting to Vaasa and getting around in Vaasa.

Vaasa is a conveniently sized city with good possibilities to use public transportation, walk, and cycle.

Many social activities take place in the city centre or nearby, as most of the social program has been planned with ease of travel in mind.

During the Conference Days

Tap water in Finland has excellent quality, so you can bring your own reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. A drinking water refill station is available in the foyer of ÅAU.

Throughout the campus buildings there are sorting bins to help you sort your waste. You’ll find:

  • Cardboard: Paper cups, paper dishes, beverage cartons
  • Bio/Organic: Food leftovers, fruit peels, napkins. No plastic cutlery or lids in this bin.
  • Plastic: Plastic bottles and other plastic waste.
  • Mixed waste: Everything else

The catering’s vegetarian options can help to lower your carbon footprint.

Please keep us up to date about your attendance to the social program and other conference events to minimize food waste.

Be Present, Use Digital

NordiCHI in Vaasa has paperless proceedings and participant materials. All abstracts, schedules, and materials are available online. Please avoid printing materials unless necessary. Please, mind energy use.

Inclusion & Diversity

The conference is committed to providing an accessible, diverse, and safe environment for participants. It includes quiet rooms and spaces available to participants, sustainability and inclusion and diversity chairs, and Newcomers’ chairs working to promote inclusion of attendees. Please read more on the Accessibility page and on the How to navigate the conference page.

Every small action counts.

By bringing your reusable bottle, sorting waste, choosing green mobility, and supporting inclusion, you are helping to set the standard for environmentally responsible academic conferences.

Thank you for helping NordiCHI 2026 be a more sustainable conference!
