2nd Call for Papers
VAKKI Communication Research Association arranges a Symposium on February 9–10, 2023 under the theme of Communicating with Purpose.
In the contemporary hybrid and fast-paced communication environment, both communication professionals and diverse publics are increasingly searching for purpose and meaning. A sense of purpose can be created through value-driven communication, social influence, communality and participation, as well as affective and experiential aspects of communication. In the so-called ‘post-truth’ era, the significance of fact-based and trustworthy communication is also highlighted. At the same time, emerging hybrid forms of communication, for example at the intersections of politics, marketing, and social media, are under scrutiny and often criticized as misleading, superficial or meaningless.
We welcome you to discuss questions of purpose and meaning in communication in the symposium held in February. We invite proposals for presentations that consider the purpose of communication for example in the following contexts:
– Science communication and environmental communication
– Organizational and leadership communication
– Business communication and economic discourses
– Societal communication and political publicity
– Media and journalism
– Research and education of communication and language studies
– Social media cultures
– Accessibility, inclusivity and diversity
– Human-technology interaction
The Symposium’s keynote speakers are:
- Oana Brindusa Albu (Copenhagen Business School): “Managing visibilities through communication: The shades and shadows of activism in repressive contexts”
- Anastasia Kavada (University of Westminster): “Communicating (with) care: Vulnerability and communication for social change”
The working languages of the symposium are Finnish, Swedish, English and German. After the symposium, presenters are invited to submit their papers to the VAKKI publication, which is a JUFO 1-level reviewed open access publication. The publication will be published at the end of 2023.
Participants may contribute with a section presentation (20 min + 5 min discussion) or a workshop presentation (according to instructions from workshop leaders). The section presentations will be held on site in Vaasa. The workshop formats are presented below.
The symposium features the following workshops:
- Challenges of digitalisation and communication in the new well-being services counties (face-to-face meeting)
- Social media influencers and politics – new research avenues (option for hybrid meeting)
- Digital and computational methods in studying organizational communication (option for hybrid meeting)
- Interfaces between cognitive accessibility and technical communication (option for hybrid meeting)
The purpose of the workshops is to provide participants with a less formal setting to exchange intellectual ideas and practical experiences on focused topics. Detailed descriptions of the workshops are available on the symposium’s website. If you want to contribute with a presentation, add ”WORKSHOP PRESENTATION” and the name of the workshop in your abstract. Write the abstract according to the instructions given in the workshop description. If no instructions are given, you can follow the general instructions below. With workshops 2–4, also mention the preferred presentation format (face-to-face/hybrid).
Please submit your workshop and section presentation abstract (max. 300 words excluding references) to symposium[at]vakki.net as an attachment (in rtf or doc format) by December 12, 2022. Please state in the message the names, e-mail addresses and affiliations of all the contributors. The papers will be selected based on the scientific quality of the abstract. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by December 19, 2022. The abstracts can be written in Finnish, Swedish, English, or German. The final presentation should be in the same language as the abstract.
Participants should register for the symposium electronically between December 19, 2022 and January 19, 2023. The registration fee is 50 €. The price includes the symposium programme and coffee on both days. There will also be a symposium dinner that is not included in the registration fee. More information on the dinner is provided later.

2. Rundbrief: Call for papers
Willkommen zum XLIII. Symposium des VAKKI-Vereins 9.−10.2.2023!
Der Forscherverein VAKKI der Universität Vaasa in Finnland organisiert 9.–10.2.2023 in Vaasa ein Symposium mit dem Thema Sinnvolle Kommunikation (nähere Beschreibung des Themas auf Englisch oben).
Die Plenarvortragenden des Symposiums sind:

Die Arbeitssprachen des Symposiums sind Finnisch, Schwedisch, Englisch und Deutsch. Nach dem Symposium haben die Vortragenden die Möglichkeit, ein Manuskript für eine peer-reviewte open access -Publikation (JUFO1) einzureichen, die Ende des Jahres 2023 herausgegeben wird.
Bei dem Symposium können Sektionsvorträge (20 Min. + 5 Min. Diskussion) oder Workshopvorträge (nach Angaben der WorkshopleiterInnen) gehalten werden. Die Sektionsvorträge werden vor Ort in Vaasa veranstaltet. Das Format der Workshops wird unten genauer vorgestellt.
Während des Symposiums werden folgende Workshops veranstaltet:

Die Workshops bieten den Teilnehmenden eine flexiblere Umgebung, die zu Diskussion und Erfahrungsaustausch zu einem abgegrenzten Thema einlädt. Eine genauere Beschreibung der Workshops finden Sie auf der Webseite des Symposiums. Falls Sie einen Vortrag in einem dieser Workshops halten wollen, nennen Sie „WORKSHOPVORTRAG“ in Ihrem Abstract und nennen Sie auch den Namen des aktuellen Workshops.
Wir bitten jetzt um Einreichung von Abstracts für Sektions- und Workshopvorträge. Bitte senden Sie Ihr Abstract (bis zu 300 Wörter ausschließlich Literaturangaben) als Attachment per E-Mail (rtf- oder doc-Format) bis zum 12.12.2022 an die Adresse symposium[at]vakki.net Bitte geben Sie in der E-Mail den/die Namen des/der Vortragenden und die Universität an. Die Vorträge werden auf Basis der wissenschaftlichen Qualität der Abstracts ausgewählt. Spätestens am 19.12.2022 benachrichtigen wir über die Annahme der Vorträge. Die Sprache der Abstracts kann Deutsch, Englisch, Finnisch oder Schwedisch sein.
Die Anmeldung zum Symposium erfolgt über ein elektronisches Formular 19.12.2022−19.1.2023. Die Teilnahmegebühr beträgt 50 €. Konferenzprogramm und Kaffee an beiden Konferenztagen sind in der Teilnahmegebühr einbegriffen. Während des Symposiums wird ein Abendessen veranstaltet, das nicht in der Teilnahmegebühr einbegriffen ist. Weitere Informationen über das Abendessen werden später gegeben.
