XLII International VAKKI Symposium

February 10–11, 2022 in Vaasa, Finland

2nd Call for Papers

Welcome to the XLII Symposium of VAKKI association on February 10–11, 2022!

The symposium is arranged under the theme of Responsible Communication. We will gather together scholars from different fields of research to think about what constitutes responsible communication in society and how we can create communicational cultures that support responsibility.

We call for presentations which can focus for example on

– corporate social responsibility communication
– accessibility and diversity
– communication practices of work and leadership
– responsible science communication
– responsibility issues in terminology work
– political publicity and journalism
– social media cultures

The Symposium’s keynote speakers are:

  • Associate Professor Martin Hultman (Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden): ”Three decades of obstruction. How to analyze, understand and change communication patterns to avoid being stuck in the knowledge-action gap of climate change?”
  • Professor Nina Janich (Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany): “Science Communication under the Condition of Uncertainty from the Perspective of Applied Linguistics”

The working languages of the symposium are Finnish, Swedish, English and German. After the symposium, presenters are invited to submit their papers to the VAKKI publication, which is a JUFO 1-level reviewed open access publication. The publication will be published at the end of 2022.

Participants may contribute with a section presentation (20 min + 5 min discussion) or a workshop presentation (according to instructions from workshop leaders). The section presentations will be mainly held face-to-face, but there is also a limited number of online slots. The workshop formats are presented below.

The symposium features the following workshops:

  1. Selkokielen kohderyhmät ja niiden huomioiminen selkokielen tutkimuksessa (in Finnish, hybrid)
  2. Responsibility in influencer communication (in Finnish and English, face-to-face)
  3. Enhancing the visibility of the social sciences through journalism (in English, hybrid)
  4. AI Ethics Terminology in Development – communication of principles and communication in principles (in English, face-to-face)

The purpose of the workshops is to provide participants with a less formal setting to exchange intellectual ideas and practical experiences on focused topics. Detailed descriptions of the workshops are available on the symposium’s website.

As for section presentations, please submit your abstracts (max. 300 words) to symposium[at] as attachments (in rtf or doc format) by January 3, 2022. Please state in the message your name, your affiliation, if you are giving your presentation together with someone else, and if you want to submit your abstract to an online session. The papers will be selected based on the scientific quality of the abstract. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by January 10, 2022.

Participants should register for the symposium electronically between January 10, 2022 and January 31, 2022. The registration fee is 40 €. The price includes the symposium programme and coffee on both days. There will also be a symposium dinner that is not included in the registration fee. More information on the dinner is provided later.

Information on other practical matters will be updated on the symposium website during the winter. If the pandemic situation allows, the symposium will for the most part be held on site in Vaasa. We will however also be prepared to arrange a hybrid symposium.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the symposium organizers, symposium[at]
