XLII International VAKKI Symposium

February 10–11, 2022 in Vaasa, Finland

1st Call for Papers

VAKKI Communication Research Association arranges a Symposium on February 10–11, 2022 under the theme of Responsible Communication.

Rapid global changes and the challenges they create have increased the significance of responsibility in working life and society as a whole. Responsible communication includes both communicating responsibility and communicating in a responsible manner.

We welcome you to discuss questions of responsibility, power, and communication in the symposium held in February. We will gather together scholars from different fields of research to think about what constitutes responsible communication in society and how we can create communicational cultures that support responsibility. The symposium continues the series of VAKKI symposia focusing on workplace communication, expanding the perspective to the domains of science, politics and public discussion.

The symposium’s keynote speakers are:

  • Associate Professor Martin Hultman (Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden)
  • Professor Nina Janich (Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany)

We call for presentations and workshops, which can focus for example on

– corporate social responsibility communication
– accessibility and diversity
– communication practices of work and leadership
– responsible science communication
– responsibility issues in terminology work
– political publicity and journalism
– social media cultures.

Given that the pandemic situation allows, the symposium will be held on site in Vaasa. We will however also be prepared to arrange a hybrid symposium.

We now invite proposals for workshop topics. The purpose of the workshops is to provide participants with a less formal setting to exchange intellectual ideas and practical experiences on focused topics. Please submit your proposal for a workshop theme along with a description of the preferred session format (face-to-face/hybrid) as an attachment (max. 300 words in rtf or doc format) to symposium[at] by October 29, 2021. Further details on registering for the workshops will be provided in the second Call for Papers at the beginning of November 2021.

Participants may also contribute with a section presentation (20 min + 5 min discussion). Please submit your abstract (max. 300 words) to symposium[at] as an attachment (in rtf or doc format) by December 10, 2021. Please state in the message your name, your affiliation and if you are giving your presentation together with someone else. The papers will be selected based on the scientific quality of the abstract. Notifications of acceptance will be sent out by December 17, 2021.

The working languages of the symposium are Finnish, Swedish, English and German. The plenaries are in English. After the symposium, presenters are invited to submit their papers to the VAKKI publication, which is a JUFO 1-level reviewed open access publication. The publication will be published at the end of 2022.
