Technobothnia

Technobothnia was founded in 1996, to increase both the cooperation between the schools, as well as being a platform for increased cooperation between the technical education and the technical industry in the Vaasa region.

This is summed up in Technobothnia’s principle of operation:

● provide a framework for high-standard education and research in the field of technology

● serve as a channel of cooperation between educational institutions, companies and other research institutes and technology centers

● offer research, and product development, as well as education, measurement and testing services to the private and the public sector

● Technobothnia laboratory facilities include e.g. 3D design and printing, HALT, electromagnetic interference laboratory capabilities

Space Data Lab

The Space Data Lab in Vaasa aims to be a repository of knowledge and data hub for Finnish and international stakeholders working with space data and space technologies. Technologies include small satellites, remote sensing and positioning.

Main focus is on data utilization for new applications and services. Another focus area is positioning with GNSS technologies, Low Earth Orbit satellite positioning and combining space based positioning with other technologies like inertial, visual and radio-based indoor positioning.

 

Ground Station in Vaasa

The ground station in Vaasa will serve in operating and communicating with various upcoming satellite missions, like the University of Vaasa’s first satellite KvarkenSat. The ground station built at the University of Vaasa campus can be used for communicating and downloading telemetry data and payload data from various satellites in the VHF and UHF frequencies. The primary purpose of the ground station in Vaasa is to command and control own satellite missions during its operational lifespan, downlinking of payload and telemetry housekeeping data of the satellite, uplink of the commands for desired operations, capability building, and educational applications.

The educational objectives of the ground station are to provide hands-on and project experience for university students, to provide a new domain in the Vaasa area for the theses and possible future courses and coursework, including both software and hardware development, and to support the development of future business opportunities in the area related to space-based data and space operations. In addition, to support studies and research related to satellite communications, telecommunications, electronic design, software development, data integration, and data management.

The Vaasa ground station will collect the data from satellites which are post-processed to obtain new and valuable information. These are stored in the database and disseminated later through the portal in addition to the open source available space-based data for utilization in various applications. The ground station acts as the main source of collecting the space-based data and disseminating it to the local citizens, interested partners, businesses in the region, researchers, and students. Implementation of the ground station has paved the way for gaining immense knowledge and understanding the concepts in the field of satellite communications, telecommunications, electronics, software development, and spatial data analysis.

Bloomberg Lab

The Bloomberg Lab is a learning environment at the University of Vaasa campus equipped with Bloomberg Terminals and financial software tools. Students, teachers, and researchers can follow, simulate and analyze Bloomberg’s real-time data on equity, and news from all over the world.

Bloomberg’s real-time data, analyses and news can be beneficial in all the different fields of the university – in Business Studies, Technology, Management, Entrepreneurs and Communication Studies.

 

 

VME Lab

Part of the purpose of the VME is to be a bridge between universities and industries. We’re a space where experts from different fields gather to create innovative solutions and pilot projects. The VME is for all; start ups, industry partners, students and researchers alike.

VAMK UAS / Design Center MUOVA’s CoProtoLab is a VR laboratory for rapid industrial service prototyping (industrial service processes innovation, visualization, development and testing environment) and the CreativeLab – cocreation facility offers room for facilitating groups with design thinking and methodologies.

The Future Reliable Electricity & Energy System Integration laboratory (FREESI-lab) consists of Protection, Automation and Communication (PAC) laboratory for testing and training the IEC 61850 based protection systems as well as OPAL-RT OP5600 real-time simulator platform, which at present time, enables controller hardware in the loop (CHIL) simulations of Smart Grids. The FREESI-lab is connected to the Sundom Smart Grid living lab environment, which is a real medium voltage grid providing a continuous IEC 61850 based data stream from twenty nodes. The ongoing and future investments into the FREESI-lab will enable the expansion of research activities and cooperation especially in the area of smart and flexible energy systems. One of the key topics of research is the time synchronization of smart grids that uses a lot of GNSS and location data for the purpose.
