PROJECT BASELINE: AIM, IMPLEMENTATION, AND RESOURCES

The aim of this co-creation project is three folded:

    1. To systematically map out the current state-of-the-art space-based remote sensing and data fusion technologies applicable to economic forecasting and contact organizations utilizing these technologies.
    2. To find potential business and research ideas in the field by co-working with different organizations, institutions, and research groups and to select 1-3 ideas for pilot development.
    3. To assess the suitability and eligibility of space-based remote sensing for economic nowcasting based on the industry mapping and pilot projects.

The aim will be reached due to work implemented in the four interlinked work packages.

Work Packages

Work Package 1

Industry/market analysis and current scientific state-of-the-art consists of identifying current industry actors and mapping the current state of scientific research. The scope of the industry analysis would be to identify actors developing, using, and benefiting from spacebased remote sensing data for business intelligence. The review of scientific research will identify seminal research articles and key commercial players advancing the state-of-the-art in using space-based data for economic forecasting. Additionally, we will map out relevant research organizations, project consortiums, policymakers, and public bodies at the national and European levels. The analysis will take into account the multidisciplinary nature of the subject and foster the dialogue between different disciplines and actors. These actions will provide us with a clear view of the industry structure and research community.

Work Package 2

Ecosystem member identification consists of the activities needed to build a dynamic multidisciplinary actor-network. It will include domestic firms developing and using space-based data for economic nowcasting and aiming at internationalization. Other potential actors in the ecosystem would include public organizations, domestic and international research groups, and universities. With the stakeholders identified in WP1, we will organize 5-10 workshops and several meetings aiming at actor engagement and joint ecosystem building with different project proposals in mind. The workshop method is collaborative learning, which increases the industry knowledge of the research team and, in return, brings the participating organizations up to date on scientific advances.

The consortium building is already underway and planning with many key members utilizing space-based data has already started. The firms that have already joined the consortium consist of providers of state-of-the-art satellite platform acquired data, data fusion technology developers, and end-users of space-based data, thus providing a good starting point for a more extensive ecosystem building and actor involvement. The research organization network will include both domestic and international organizations.

Work Package 3

Future pathways and project ideation consists of the activities related to Roadmap building together with the ecosystem members. First, we clarify and narrow down the pre-defined research areas. Secondly, we define research questions and construct R&D project paths for each area. These paths consist of project ideas with distinct scope, ambition levels, and timelines for Co-Innovation projects. Thirdly, we start to build the consortium project with the firms and other stakeholders. Our aim is to extend from the initial research ideas to build a trusting consortium.

Currently, we have identified three interlinked research and development areas, initial research questions, and initial project ideas, which form the base for the WP4 work: ESG evaluation, Raw materials monitoring, and Supply chain monitoring

Work Package 4

Choosing pilot projects is directed to 1-3 potential firms in developing or utilizing developed solutions in the identified research and development areas. In the pilot projects, select ideas identified in the WP3 would be further developed in cooperation with the firms to build a roadmap for a Co-Innovation project.
