Arja Kuusisto: Testing artist-designed interventions to reduce food waste in school dining
Food waste is a persistent sustainability challenge that requires new approaches beyond traditional interventions. This study explores the potential of artistic expertise to generate innovative solutions for reducing plate waste in school dining. Through a case study conducted in a large secondary school in western Finland, artists developed and implemented four intervention concepts that were subsequently tested and evaluated. The findings demonstrate how artistic expertise can contribute to sustainability challenges by creating novel, engaging, and context-sensitive solutions that address multiple drivers of food waste.
Bio: Arja Kuusisto is a researcher at the University of Vaasa whose work focuses on innovation management. Her research examines service innovation, user innovation, and the integration of external and internal sources of knowledge into innovation processes. In particular, she has extensive experience in studying how organizations can engage customers and employees in innovation and continuous improvement activities. In recent years, her work has addressed sustainability challenges in the field of food waste reduction.
Petra Berg: Towards a Typology of Governance Models in Circular Ecosystems: Insights from Reusable Packaging Systems
The shift toward circular economy requires organisations to move beyond firm-level action and collaborate within broader ecosystems. Yet governing these ecosystems, where diverse actors must coordinate around shared circular goals remains poorly understood. In this study, we examine how different governance arrangements shape the development of reusable packaging ecosystems across Europe. Drawing on a qualitative multiple case study of six European ecosystems, we develop a typology of five governance ideal types, each with distinct characteristics that influence how circular ecosystems emerge and evolve. Our findings offer both analytical tools for researchers and practical insights for organisations and policymakers seeking to design governance structures that support circularity at scale.
Bio: Petra Berg is a postdoctoral researcher in the Marketing and Consumption Research Group at the University of Vaasa. Her research spans energy governance and sustainability transitions, circular economy, macromarketing, and cybersecurity in critical infrastructure, with a focus on how systemic marketing governance arrangements shape pathways toward (un) sustainability.
