You are most welcome to the seminar with a focus on the Energy Transition. In this seminar, we have research presentations from doctoral students Hassan Yousaf and Talha Anis.
Hassan Yousaf: Unintended Energy Transition: The Role of Household Agency in Disrupting the Electricity Regime in Pakistan
Recent geopolitical tensions and volatility in global energy markets have created uncertainty and made it harder for many countries, especially in the Global South, to meet their growing energy needs. These pressures often affect households the most, who must find their own ways to secure reliable electricity when central systems struggle to deliver. In this study, we look at how households respond to these challenges and how their everyday decisions start to influence the direction of the energy system. Our findings show that, even when these actions are driven by frustration or necessity rather than environmental concerns, they can unintentionally push the system toward sustainable pathways. Bio: Hassan Yousaf is a doctoral researcher at the School of Technology and Innovation, University of Vaasa. His research focuses on the role of different actors in accelerating energy transitions, with a particular interest in how intermediaries foster collaboration among actors with vested interests and shape new pathways for sustainability.
Talha Anis: Quantifying Energy Justice at the Project Level: Developing an Index for Fair and Sustainable Energy Transitions
As the race to decarbonize accelerates, a central question emerges: who bears the burdens of the energy transition and who truly benefits? Energy justice provides a framework for ensuring that these transitions are fair, inclusive, and accountable. This study introduces a project-level Energy Justice Index to systematically assess justice outcomes across multiple dimensions of energy justice using theory-driven indicators and metrics. By applying them to real-world energy projects through case studies, the index provides a practical tool for evaluating how justice principles are realized in practice.
Bio: Talha Anis is a doctoral researcher at the School of Industrial Management, University of Vaasa. His research focuses on exploring energy justice, social acceptance, and just transitions, with particular emphasis on the measurement and operationalization of energy justice from theory into practice.
Warm welcome,
