Abstract:
Nature loss is increasingly a financial issue. Companies can be exposed because they depend on ecosystem services or because their activities damage nature and they become subject to regulation, litigation, changing preferences, or other transition forces. I discuss recent research showing that companies already perceive these risks as financially material and that investors have begun to price these risks. I then illustrate how new spatial data can make nature considerations more actionable for investment and lending decisions. I close with some thoughts on future nature-finance research and with implications of the evidence for investors and banks.
