German 1 (3 ECTS) Savonia

Moodle exam: during week 50.

CEFR level: Starting level 0, target level A1. 

Prerequisite: Completing the course does not require previous knowledge in German. 

Course contents: In German 1 course, the students will learn the basics of the German language. They will learn how to pronounce German and how to use some greetings and introduce people to each other. They will learn how to communicate in simple everyday situations.  

The course has three modules: 

  • Getting to know each other / Kennenlernen 
  • In the student cafeteria / In der Mensa 
  • Studies/ Studium 

Vocabulary: numbers, greetings, time, week days, months, seasons, food and drink, study 

Grammar topics: verb conjugation in present tense, personal pronouns, question words, words with der, die and das articles, the use of definite and indefinite articles, nominative and accusative cases, asking questions, word order in questions and main clause  

Learning outcomes: Student will be   

  • able to communicate in various everyday situations. 
  • able to write simple messages.  
  • familiar with culture and everyday life in German-speaking Europe. 
  • able to talk about their country in German. 

Study material: All the materials are available in a digital learning environment. 

Teaching and evaluation methods: The course assessment consists of 

  • actively completed assignments, 
  • active participation in the webinars, 
  • assignments returned and passed. 

The total course grade takes into account the final assignment points and the points of the module based returned assignments. 

For the lowest grade you need at least 50 % of the points, for grade 3 the limit is to get at least 70% of the points, and for grade 5 you need at least 90% of the points.  

Grading scale and evaluation criteria: Pass/Fail or 0-5 depending on the implementation. 

Amount of work depending on modes of study: 81 hours. One credit corresponds to 27 h of student’s work.
