CEFR-level: Starting level 0, target level A1.

Prerequisite: There are no prerequisites for this course.

Course contents: The course introduces the Arabic alphabet phonetically and calligraphically. The topics include, for example, greetings, nationalities, family members, dates, time, jobs, animals, food, the weather, etc. The course tackles basic Arabic grammar with various grammar exercises. It also focuses on speaking and reading simple sentences using various conversational exercises.

Learning outcomes: After completing the course, the students will be able to

  • Read and write the Arabic alphabet fluently.
  • Understand basic vocabulary words relevant to daily life.
  • Communicate orally in Arabic in basic situations such as introducing oneself and other conversational situations.
  • Understand basic grammatical concepts on the level of words and simple sentences.
  • Get introduced to Arabic everyday culture.

Study material:

All learning materials on vocabulary building, basic grammar, reading, writing, speaking, and listening are regularly made available on the digital learning platform.

Teaching and evaluation methods: Students use material and guidelines made available to them on the digital platform to learn independently. In addition to texts, the material includes recorded lectures that explain the relevant lessons, as well as practice drills, and links to online resources when applicable. Students finish assignments based on the shared material, and may include written or recorded tasks. While there are no scheduled meeting times, students can reach out to the teacher with any questions and concerns via email or the digital platform. Virtual office hours and sessions can be arranged upon the request of students and when needed. Evaluation is based on completion assignments and final creative projects.

Grading scale and evaluation criteria: Pass/Fail.

Amount of work depending on modes of study:

  • Independent study (includes learning tasks) 40 h
  • Complete assignments and exercises 30 h
  • Final project 11 h
  • A total of 81h. One credit corresponds to 27 h of student work (3 x 27 h = 81 h).
