Course description

Content and Course Objectives 

In this course, you will begin to study Russian from the very basics, i.e., the alphabet. You will become familiar with Russian Cyrillic letters through a variety of exercises and recordings. In additions to this, you will learn: 

  • To say hello and introduce yourself 
  • To ask and tell how everything is going in life 
  • To tell about yourself and your family 
  • To visit and have conversation in a coffee shop 
  • To understand the Russian name system 
  • To have simple phone conversations 
  • To tell the time and days of the week 
  • numbers 0–100 

From the structures you will learn:  

  • personal and possessive pronouns 
  • from cases the prepositional form 
  • the present tense of verbs 

After this course you will be able to: 

  • know the basics of Russian pronunciation 
  • speak and write words and simple sentences 
  • get by in the most common language use situations 

Learning materials: All learning materials can be found from the digital learning platform. 

Teaching and Assessment Methods: You will practice independently with texts, recordings, and interactive exercises on the learning platform. Depending on the implementation, the course may include voluntary online lessons. 

The assessment is based on: 

  • returnable oral and written assignments are evaluated as passed/failed 
  • The final exam accounts for 60% of the course grade, while the two intermediate exams account for 40%. 

Grading scale and evaluation criteria: Pass/Fail or 05 depending on the implementation.  

Amount of work depending on modes of study:  

  • independent study 45 h 
  • returnable assignments 20 h 
  • joint online meetings or correspondingly independent study 10h 
  • exams 6 h 
  • In total 81 h. One credit corresponds to 27 h of students work (3 x 27 h = 81 h).  

Enrolment to the courses in the spring term starts on December 2nd 2024 and ends on January 12th 2025.
