Lis\u00e4ksi pyysin, ettei h\u00e4n mainitsisi nauhan sis\u00e4ll\u00f6st\u00e4 minulle mit\u00e4\u00e4n sanallakaan. L\u00e4hett\u00e4misen ja kuunteluiden v\u00e4lill\u00e4 oli varmuudeksi useampi p\u00e4iv\u00e4. Seuraus? Ei mit\u00e4\u00e4n.<\/p>\n

Seuraavaksi l\u00e4hetin nauhan toiselle yst\u00e4v\u00e4lleni ja pyysin kuunteluttamaan mahdollisimman monen \u00e4lylaitteen l\u00e4sn\u00e4 ollessa samoilla ohjeistuksilla kuin edellisellekin. Kolmen eri ihmisen puhelimet osallistuivat testiin. Seuraus? Ei mit\u00e4\u00e4n.<\/p>\n

T\u00e4ss\u00e4 vaiheessa vihdoin hoksasin katsella omia someasetuksiani ja l\u00f6ysensin niit\u00e4. Pyysin j\u00e4lkimm\u00e4ist\u00e4 porukkaa toistamaan testin. Seuraus? T\u00e4ll\u00e4 kertaa jotakin.<\/p>\n

Valitsemani aihe oli mets\u00e4stys ja kalastus. Viimeisenk\u00e4\u00e4n testin j\u00e4lkeen en saanut suoraan mets\u00e4stykseen liittyv\u00e4\u00e4 mainontaa, mutta sain aiemmasta poiketen luonnossa liikkumiseen liittyv\u00e4\u00e4 mainontaa sek\u00e4 sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4, jossa oli aseita. My\u00f6s kalastusv\u00e4linemainoksia esiintyi. Aalto oli nopea ja sammui pian sen j\u00e4lkeen, kun olin selannut tarjontaa pari kertaa. Siin\u00e4 vaiheessahan selaus muuttuu osaksi tulkintaa siit\u00e4, kiinnostavatko aiheet ja tulisiko niit\u00e4 tarjota lis\u00e4\u00e4. En pys\u00e4htynyt katsomaan tarjottuja mainoksia tarkemmin, jotta en toiminnallani lis\u00e4isi niit\u00e4 \u2013 jolloin toiminnallani sen sijaan harvensin niiden esiintymist\u00e4. Sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4 tuli kuitenkin useammasta eri l\u00e4hteest\u00e4, joten kyse ei ole sattumalta aihepiiriin osuneesta mainoskampanjasta. Kaikki sis\u00e4lt\u00f6 ei my\u00f6sk\u00e4\u00e4n ollut mainontaa.<\/p>\n

Haasteeksi testiss\u00e4 tuli se, etten voinut esimerkiksi juurikaan toistella aihealueen br\u00e4ndej\u00e4, koska en niit\u00e4 tuntenut enk\u00e4 testin vuoksi voinut tietoa laitteillani etsi\u00e4k\u00e4\u00e4n. Testiss\u00e4 avustaneet olivat lis\u00e4ksi minulle l\u00e4heisi\u00e4 ihmisi\u00e4, joten heid\u00e4n kytk\u00f6ksens\u00e4 minuun voi olla osaltaan vaikuttanut tekij\u00e4 sen suhteen, ett\u00e4 tulisin tunnistetuksi. Tilanne on siis eri kuin t\u00e4ysin tuntemattomien ihmisten \u00e4lylaitteiden kanssa.<\/p>\n

Silti minun someeni tuli hetkellisesti tavallisesta poikkeavaa sis\u00e4lt\u00f6\u00e4 sen j\u00e4lkeen, kun muiden ihmisten \u00e4lylaitteilla kuunneltiin, kun puhuin aiheesta, josta v\u00e4itin alkaneeni kiinnostua.<\/p>\n

Tulokset olivat mielest\u00e4ni kaikessa ep\u00e4varmuudessaan kiinnostavia. Vaikka en voi minitestin perusteella tietenk\u00e4\u00e4n saada tieteellisesti p\u00e4tev\u00e4\u00e4 lopputulosta, alustavasti todenn\u00e4k\u00f6isempi vaihtoehto on mielest\u00e4ni puheen perusteella kohdennettu sis\u00e4lt\u00f6 kuin sattuma.<\/p>\n

Mini-Test of the Artificial Ears<\/strong><\/h2>\n

In the first part of this blog series, Ever-Listening Artificial Ears \u2013 At the Mercy of Others in Public Spaces<\/em> (https:\/\/sites.uwasa.fi\/bugged\/2025\/09\/17\/ever-listening-artificial-ears-at-the-mercy-of-others-in-public-spaces\/<\/a>), I wrote about being eavesdropped on via another person\u2019s devices. This is made possible by voice profile recognition. I described an incident where it seemed that social media advertising began to target spoken topics after a conversation took place near another person\u2019s device.<\/p>\n

After publishing the blog, I conducted a few mini-tests to see if something similar would happen to me. Thank you to those who participated!<\/p>\n

I chose a topic that I\u2019m not interested in and that I don\u2019t usually receive social media content about. I then spoke about this topic to myself for about a minute, using a \u201cdumb\u201d recorder, away from my smart devices. I sent the recording via a messaging app to a friend without opening it and asked him to play it on his own devices. I also asked him not to mention the content to me at all. Several days passed between sending and listening, just to be sure. Result? Nothing.<\/p>\n

Next, I sent the recording to another friend and asked her to play it in the presence of as many smart devices as possible, with the same instructions. Three different people\u2019s phones participated in the test. Result? Nothing.<\/p>\n

At this point, I finally checked my own social media settings and loosened them. I asked the second group to repeat the test. Result? This time, something happened.<\/p>\n

The topic I chose was hunting and fishing. Even after the final test, I didn\u2019t receive ads directly related to hunting, but I did get content related to outdoor activities and some featuring weapons. Fishing gear ads also appeared. The wave was quick and faded soon after I browsed the content a couple of times. At that point, browsing becomes part of the interpretation of whether the topics are of interest and should be offered more. I didn\u2019t stop to look at the ads in detail, so my actions instead reduced their frequency. However, the content came from multiple sources, so it wasn\u2019t just a coincidental ad campaign. There was content outside of advertising too.<\/p>\n

One challenge in the test was that I couldn\u2019t repeat a lot of brand names related to the topic because I didn\u2019t know them, and I couldn\u2019t search for them on my devices due to the nature of the test. The people who helped with the test were close to me, so their connection to me might have influenced the likelihood of me being identified. The situation is different from using completely unknown people\u2019s smart devices.<\/p>\n

Still, my social media briefly showed unusual content after other people\u2019s smart devices listened to me talk about a topic I claimed to have become interested in.<\/p>\n

Despite the uncertainty, I found the results intriguing. While I can\u2019t draw scientifically valid conclusions from the mini-test, I think the more likely explanation is content targeted based on speech rather than coincidence.<\/p>\n

Did the test result in any content changes for those whose devices listened to the recording? According to all participants, no.<\/p>\n
